Lo que hay que saber de Ice Age

La historia

Terisiare congelada, tribus en guerra y el nigromante Lim-Dûl

Ice Age ocurre en Terisiare, un continente de Dominaria. Allí terminó la Brothers' War con el Sylex Blast, una explosión tan potente que cambió el clima del planeta. Las grandes civilizaciones de la región cayeron, por la guerra o por el hielo. Sobre el hielo surgieron culturas nuevas que peleaban por sobrevivir. Cuando el nigromante Lim-Dûl lanzó una horda de no muertos, los viejos enemigos tuvieron que trabajar juntos o ser arrasados.

El mundo se inspira en la mitología y la cultura nórdicas: los nombres suenan escandinavos y en el arte hay runas y ropa de estilo nórdico. Ice Age abrió además un bloque. Alliances se vendió como parte de él, y años después Coldsnap fue el set perdido de la Edad de Hielo.

Ice Age fue la sexta expansión de Magic y la primera de su bloque. También fue la primera expansión independiente: se podía jugar sin otros productos, así que reimprimió las cinco tierras básicas y clásicos como Swords to Plowshares y Giant Growth. Y fue el primer set que Wizards imprimió tanto como pidieron los jugadores. Lo diseñaron los East Coast Playtesters, parte de los primeros playtesters de Magic, que también diseñaron Antiquities, Fallen Empires y Alliances.

Mecánicas nuevas

Cumulative upkeep, tierras snow-covered, slowtrips y colores aliados

Cumulative upkeep: un costo de mantenimiento que sube cada turno. Al comienzo de tu mantenimiento pones un contador de edad en el permanente y luego lo sacrificas, salvo que pagues su costo una vez por cada contador. En Ice Age se usó solo como desventaja de cartas muy poderosas, y 27 cartas del set la tienen. Un ejemplo es Illusions of Grandeur.

Tierras snow-covered: una versión nevada de cada tierra básica, con el supertipo Snow. Ese supertipo no hace nada por sí solo: otras cartas se fijan en él, y 20 cartas del set nombran tierras snow. Icequake y Thermokarst, por ejemplo, destruyen una tierra y, si era snow, el primero hace 1 de daño a su controlador y el segundo te da 1 punto de vida.

Slowtrips: un cantrip es un hechizo que, además de su efecto, te devuelve una carta, y nació en Ice Age. Allí la carta llegaba con retraso: la robas al comienzo del mantenimiento del turno siguiente, y por eso hoy se les llama slowtrips. Blessed Wine, por ejemplo, te da 1 punto de vida, y hay 22 cartas con ese texto en el set. Pronto Wizards decidió que era mejor robar la carta de inmediato.

Colores aliados: más que una habilidad, es un tema del set: cartas de un color que piden o mejoran con maná de un color aliado. Word of Undoing, por ejemplo, es un instantáneo azul que devuelve una criatura a la mano y, con ella, las auras blancas tuyas que tenga.

Curiosidades

Richard Garfield imaginó que Magic se reinventaría cada cierto tiempo. Con la llegada de Ice Age, el juego iba a llamarse Magic: Ice Age. El plan se descartó porque, para mantener el copyright, el nombre debía ser continuo, y porque el nombre original ya había pegado entre los jugadores.
